After our visit to the YSP, we decided to go into Leeds as it was only half an hour away. We never waste an opportunity :-) ! We were keen to visit the Leeds Art Gallery in the City Centre.
When we arrived, we actually found that the art gallery itself was adjoined to the Henry Moore Institute, a centre which is dedicated to the study of sculpture. However, this was closed on the day of our visit as they were changing an exhibition. So we went into the Leeds Gallery instead.
Within the gallery itself, there was only really one piece of work that really grabbed my attention and got me directly engaged with it. This piece of work was 'The Model for the Leeds Brick Man' by Anthony Gormley. I took a sneaky picture on my phone:
I was immediately drawn to Gormley's work because of its unusualness. This art obect is a life size sculpture of a man. I really like the tactile quality of the work, and the fact that it is made out of hundreds upon hundreds of tiny bricks. I wasn't sure at the time if we couldn't touch it or not, and there were no signs around it, so I did!
Orginally the sculpture was part of a proposal for a 180 feet high sculpture which was going to be erected on waste ground near Leeds Railway Station. Unfortunately the proposal and the project was not successful because planning permission wasn't granted.
Despite this sculpture project being unable to proceed, Anthony Gormley did go onto experience success with his larger than life sculpture 'The Angel of The North' in 1998.
After our visit to the YSP and Leeds Art Gallery we were all completely pooped, so we drove all the way back home after a brilliant day which was filled with lots of fun and laughter! :-)
